The health sciences sector is projected to grow as it will experience of number of retirements in certain occupations and an increase demand for health care services.  This phenomenon is sometimes referred to the “silver tsunami”  which means  that  the demand for health  care services from seniors will increase, and there are concerns that the health care sector does not have the resources to adequately address this need. Over the last few years, there has been an emphasis on recruiting health care professionals to Windsor-­‐Essex. The future outlook of the health care occupations is very promising. It is an occupation that has one of the highest employment rates, making medical office assistants highly in demand.


From 2009-2018, job openings in health care occupations will result mainly from replacement needs, especially from the need to replace workers who retire. The retirement rate for the workers in this occupation will be among the highest for all occupations primarily because workers in this occupation are generally much older than the average worker. In the 2009-2018 period, 71 756 employees are expected to retire from their medical office assistant positions.


The number of job seekers coming mainly from the school system is expected to decline in Canada over the 2009-2018 periods. This is because there was a small demand for this occupation in the past. However now that the majority of the employees from this occupation are expected to retire in the upcoming years, there are very few people to meet this new demand. The result is fewer new job seekers over the next few years to meet the increase in job openings.


The increasing use of computerized medical records systems, billing systems and other office equipment technology in medical offices and clinics means that medical secretaries with strong computer skills have better employment opportunities. Some employers also look for experience in medical terminology. Therefore, due to the advancement of technology, this occupation which used to require minimal post-secondary education, now has higher expectations with regards to available skills and knowledge. This limits the list of potential employees for job openings in this occupation to graduates who have taken courses related to the job field.

The registered massage therapy profession came to be in 1919 when it was recognized by the Drugless Practitioners Act as a designated health profession. Today it is governed by the Regulated Health Profession Act which has helped to make massage therapy a highly accepted and respected health profession.
